Healthy Hikes in Middle Georgia

Hiking outdoors has plenty of perks: nice views, fresh air, and the sounds and smells of nature.

It's good for you, too. Hiking is a powerful cardio workout.

Below are five healthy hikes in the middle Georgia area that you can do today.

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park  |  WEBSITE
Located in Macon, Ocmulgee Mounds offers eight miles of peaceful trails that give visitors opportunities to see seven historical mounds as well as vibrant wetlands and forest environments. Most of the trails are a mile or less in length (one way), but can be joined together to form loops if desired. Park benches are placed at various places along the trails for visitor convenience.

High Falls State Park  |  WEBSITE
Located northwest of Macon, High Falls State Park is named for tumbling cascades on the Towaliga River. Visitors can hike along the river’s edge and through hilly forest to the remains of a hydroelectric power plant foundation.

Indian Springs State Park  |  WEBSITE
Indian Springs is one of the oldest state parks in the United States and a popular spot for outdoor recreation. The park includes the Overland Nature Trail, a 0.75-mile loop along the Aboothlacoosta creek.

Dauset Trails Nature Center  |  WEBSITE
Located a few miles south of Jackson, you can explore 20 miles of scenic trails on foot or mountain bike at Dauset Trails. These trails span natural terrain from bottom land to steep slopes. The area features over 1,400 acres of scenic woods, fields, creeks and lakes.

Sprewell Bluff Park  |  WEBSITE
Located on the Flint River outside of Thomaston, Sprewell Bluff Park is the perfect location for a hike along the river bank. With nearly 10 miles of trails in the park, you can hike next to the river or to amazing views of the Flint River from the overlooks above.
